Megachurch Architecture

Slate has an interesting slide show on the architectural styles of various megachurches. There are three basic styles: thoroughly secular, just plain hideous, or both at once, as in the new Catholic cathedral for Los Angeles:

More churches should be hiring Duncan Stroik or Thomas Gordon Smith.

An administrator who studies mega Churches for an older Evangelical Church association told me they often have very long driveways. This is a feature frequently found and very intential although unclear about the purpose. I've noticed these in the Churches in my area.

It's amazing that structures so unfriendly to the sidewalk can still be built in 2005.

I don't expect usuable spaces at the streetfront but surely they could have done something which added some complexity and visual interest.
